Inequality and Deaths of Despair in Canada
This multi-author study originating out of the University of Alberta School of Public Health provides further evidence of a link between economic inequality and deaths from suicide, drug overdose, and alcohol-related diseases (so-called "deaths of despair").
Data used in the study came from a longitudinal survey of Canadians, who were followed from May 2006 to December 2019. The association between inequality and mortality was moderated and made stronger by age, gender, racialized minority status and income at the household and area levels.
The study is currently gated but can be previewed/accessed here.
